MAKE Roanoke is transitioning our classes and events away from Meetup

Over the next few months, MAKE Roanoke is going to be transitioning away from Meetup as the event hosting platform of choice. We're not 100% certain where we'll end up long term, but it's looking like we'll either be completely hosted right here on our website, or on a custom platform we build. No matter where we end up, events will be listed on our website's event page where you can now filter by types of event and more.

Here's what it means for you, based on what we know now:

  1. Members Only Classes will be the first to transition away, with the first one to be our July 12 TIG Welding Class.

    1. Open to the public classes and maker minis will be the next to transition.

    2. Free events that don't have a seating limit (Maker Meetups, General Orientations, etc) will be listed on both platforms until we fully transition away.

  2. Classes will move from pay-at-the-door to pay-in-advance. Students will get a ticket of some kind to show when they arrive. (Showing it digitally is just fine!)

  3. There will be an opportunity to get a refund if your plans change, and tickets will be transferable.

    1. Right now the refund window is at least 48 hours before the class starts, after that no refunds will be issued.

    2. Member Rate tickets can only be transferred to another Member.

  4. We will still be able to accept last minute additions pay-at-the-door if there is space permitting. Those payments can be cash, card (including tap to pay), or PayPal.

  5. While we transition there might not be emailed class announcements like Meetup does. We recommend keeping an eye on the #announcements channel in the Discord Server for the most up to date class announcements.

  6. You should still hang onto your Meetup account for the time being as some events will be registered through there.

Why are we moving away from Meetup?

  1. Meetup costs us a few hundred dollars a year, and does not have all the features we'd like.

  2. We'd like for people to not need yet another account.

  3. We'd like to take payment up front, and Meetup only offers PayPal as a payment option at our payment level (yet another account!) and does not offer tiered pricing, which we need for Member Discounts
